How to make a Star with your Shashibo

The Star is the shape most people picture when they hear "Shashibo" — six points, a hexagonal window in the middle, and every one of those 36 magnets doing its job.

Hands holding a Shashibo unfolded into a star

On the official route the Star is stop number two, right after the Crown. If you can open a corner, you can make a Star — it is the same move, done twice.

Two moves from the box

  1. Start with a closed cube and find one of its two opening corners.
  2. Gently pull that corner open like a pistachio. The pieces settle into the Crown.
  3. Find the Crown's closed corner — the one opposite the corner you just opened.
  4. Open that closed corner the same gentle way.
  5. Let the ring spread out flat until the magnets connect. You are holding a Star.

How to know you got it

  • Six points around the outside.
  • A hexagonal hole in the middle you can look straight through.
  • The shape stays put when you set it down — the magnets hold it.

Where the Star takes you

The Star is a crossroads. Fold its corners toward the inside and connect them, and you get the Ball. Follow the official sheet instead and the Hive comes next. Bring a second Shashibo and the Star's hexagonal hole becomes a socket — a Ball from another cube sits right in it.

Stars also stack. Two, three or four of them connect through their outer magnets into bigger star sculptures, which is where collecting starts to make sense.

When the Star won't lie flat

Usually one piece has rolled a little too far. Back up one move, let the pieces fold through again slowly, and wait for the click instead of pressing the shape into place.

Star: quick answers

How do you make a star with a Shashibo?

Open one corner of the closed cube to make the Crown, then open the Crown's closed corner. The ring spreads into a six-pointed Star with a hexagonal hole in the middle.

Is the Shashibo Star hard to make?

No. It is the second shape on the official beginner route and takes just two opening moves from the cube.

What can I make from a Shashibo Star?

Fold its corners toward the inside and connect them to make the Ball, continue to the Hive on the official route, or combine Stars from several cubes into larger sculptures.
