Shashibo Holographic Series: Cosmos, Vapor, Solar, Polar
The Shashibo Holographic Series in our catalog: Cosmos, Vapor, Solar and Polar, plus the Solar and Vapor bundle. How the shimmer plays with light as you fold.

Most Shashibo designs change as you fold because new artwork appears on the inside. The Holographic Series adds a second kind of change: the finish itself shimmers, so the same panel looks different depending on how the light hits it. Tilt a holographic cube under a desk lamp and it moves even when your hands are still.
What makes it holographic
Underneath, a Holographic Series cube is a classic DODECA: 12 hinged pieces, 36 magnets, 100+ shapes, one outer design and three more inside. What changes is the surface. The holographic finish catches light differently on every panel, so when a fold turns some panels toward you and others away, the shimmer reshuffles along with the shape. A long stripe glints one way; a star throws light around its points.
That makes this series a little more visual than tactile. People who enjoy looking at their cube as much as handling it tend to love it.
The four designs on our shelf
- Cosmos: a galactic, space-themed design. Pairs nicely with Spaced Out or the Explorer Moon for a space-themed build.
- Vapor: dreamy, hazy and a little retro, with a soft glow as panels twist into place.
- Solar: warm, sunny tones that brighten a desk the moment you start folding.
- Polar: icy, shimmering and cool, like a pocket-sized northern sky.
There is also the Solar and Vapor bundle, two Holographic Series cubes in one box, around $45 at the time of writing. Warm and cool side by side is the whole point, and the contrast becomes part of any sculpture you build with both.
Choosing between them
Think about mood and where the cube will live.
- For a bedroom or nightstand, Cosmos or Polar: cool tones that feel calm.
- For a bright desk, Solar: warm and cheerful.
- For someone who likes soft, retro color, Vapor.
- For a gift that covers two moods at once, the Solar and Vapor bundle.
Building with holographic cubes
Like every Shashibo, these connect to other cubes through their outer magnets. A few pairings work especially well. Polar next to the Wild Series Arctic gives you a frosty, cool-toned build. Solar next to the Jumbie Series Fire Goddess is all warmth. Cosmos with Spaced Out from the Original Series builds a small universe on your desk.
Try the official star-and-ball combination with two holographic cubes: fold one into a star, the other into a ball, and set the ball in the hole of the star. Under a lamp, the shimmer bounces between the two.
Getting the most shine
- Fold near a single light source such as a desk lamp or a window; the shimmer shows best with direct light.
- Turn shapes slowly. The effect is in the change between angles.
- Try flat shapes too: the hexagonal disc on the official beginner route shows a lot of surface at once.
- Keep the finish clean by handling it with dry hands and wiping with a soft, dry cloth.
Is it harder to fold?
No. The mechanism is the same as any DODECA. Open it on one of the two corners that open, pull gently like a pistachio, and you are into the official route of crown and star. If you are brand new, our guide on how to open your first Shashibo covers the first steps.
Holographic and the rest of the family
The holographic designs on our shelf are DODECA cubes. Cosmos also appears in the OCTA and ICOSA XL formats, though as regular Cosmos artwork rather than under the Holographic Series name. If you want a size ladder in one theme, Cosmos is the design to watch: OCTA Cosmos, the Holographic Cosmos DODECA and ICOSA XL Cosmos can sit and connect side by side.
Who it suits
The Holographic Series is a strong pick for kids aged 8 and up who are drawn to anything shiny, for teens who want their desk to look a little more stylish, and for adults who like a fidget they can also admire. It is just as quiet as any other Shashibo, so it fits a study session or a nightstand. If the person you are buying for prefers bold characters or busy patterns, the character cubes or the Jumbie Series might suit them better; if they love light and color, this is the shelf.
Light, shape and pattern all moving at once. That is the holographic fold.
