Shashibo Safety and Care: Magnets, Ages and Storage
Shashibo safety and care basics: ages 8+, magnet and pacemaker warnings, keeping electronics clear, protecting stickers and hinges, gentle cleaning and storage.

A Shashibo is a simple toy: injection-molded plastic, tear-resistant stickers, hinges and magnets. No batteries, no screens. That simplicity is part of the charm, and it also means looking after one is mostly common sense. Here is what the official instructions say, plus sensible care habits that keep a cube folding smoothly for a long time.
Part one: safety
Who it is for
Shashibo is recommended for ages 8 and up. The official packaging also carries a choking hazard warning: there are small parts, so it is not for children under 3. In a house with toddlers, treat it like any small-parts toy and keep it on a high shelf when the older kids are done.
Magnets and electronics
The classic DODECA holds 36 rare-earth magnets, the OCTA 28 and the ICOSA XL 72. The official instructions say the toy contains magnets and that magnets can affect electronic devices. In practice, that means:
- Do not rest it on a laptop, phone or tablet.
- Keep it away from cards with magnetic strips and anything else you would not want near a magnet.
- Store it in a spot of its own rather than in a bag pocket next to electronics.
Pacemakers and medical devices
This one is important. The official instructions advise that people with pacemakers should not play with Shashibo. If you or someone in the household uses a pacemaker or another implanted medical device, follow that warning and ask their doctor for guidance.
Part two: everyday care
Fold gently
Most wear comes from forcing. The instructions put it well: gently let your Shashibo fold through itself until you feel the magnets connect. If a fold resists, back up one move and try again rather than pushing harder. A Shashibo can only be opened on 2 of its 8 corners; trying to pry the other six apart puts stress on the hinges for no reward.
Look after the stickers
The stickers are tear-resistant, but they last longest when you are kind to them. Handle the cube with clean, dry hands. Avoid picking at edges, and do not use sharp objects to open a stuck corner. If an edge starts to lift, press it back down with a clean finger and keep the cube out of heat while it settles.
Cleaning
There is no official cleaning procedure, so stick to the gentle approach that suits any printed plastic toy:
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.
- For sticky spots, use a cloth that is barely damp with plain water, then dry right away.
- Do not soak it, run it under a tap or put it in a dishwasher.
- Skip solvents, alcohol and harsh cleaners, which can be hard on printed surfaces.
Storing
- Close it back into a cube before putting it away; use the outer pattern as a guide.
- Keep it out of direct sun and away from heat sources such as radiators and car dashboards on hot days.
- Give connected sculptures a flat, stable spot so they do not topple.
- Keep cubes away from electronics, even in storage.
When a cube feels stuck
Almost every stuck moment has the same cause: a fold that went halfway through and stopped. Do not lever it with fingernails or tools. Instead, reverse the last move you made, slowly, until the pieces sit flat again. If you are lost entirely, work back toward the cube shape, using the outer pattern as a guide to see which faces belong outside. The brand's free app has instructional videos for 70+ shapes, which helps when you want to see a fold done correctly from start to finish.
Sharing a cube
Shashibos get passed around a lot, at school, at the office and at family tables. Before handing one over, it helps to show the newcomer the two corners that open and remind them to go gently. A thirty-second demo saves the hinges from a lot of enthusiastic prying, and it makes the first shape a success instead of a struggle.
Travel
The OCTA is the brand's beginner and travel format, small enough for a pocket or backpack. Whatever size you carry, keep it in its own pocket, away from phones and cards.
Quick checklist
- Ages 8+, not for under 3.
- No play for people with pacemakers.
- Keep away from electronic devices.
- Fold gently, never force a corner.
- Dry cloth to clean, no soaking.
- Store closed, cool and out of the sun.
Follow those and your cube will keep its click, its color and its flow.
